Imaginary Friends, 2011

This exhibition was the outcome of a collaboration with 7 fellow designers, all LCC's MA graduates. It was an amazing experience as we had to come up with the whole thing from scratch, from defining a theme, curating and organising the show, hiring a gallery space and contacting sponsors, PR, etc. And last but not least, making some artwork!

Here's a brief explanation of my posters:

As a child, as far as I can remember, I didn't have imaginary friends. But I used to talk to myself a lot. My imaginary friend is my alter ego. Strangely enough we do communicate, and although we tend to get along well, as opposite personalities we often argue about things.

Sometimes I'm a responsible worker and taxpayer whereas he just wants to freely enjoy the pleasures of life. At times it's the other way around. We are always on opposite sides, struggling in a sort of cognitive scenario to reach a fine balance. This gives me headaches.

1) IMAGINARY FRIEND PORTRAIT POSTER

2) WORK IN PROGRESS The playing cards beautifully designed by Piatnik were a strong initial reference, as I was looking into ways of representing opposites with simmetry and visual balance. We decided to screeprint our posters and chose these 2 colours.

3) DIALOGUE POSTER My type based poster brought a quote from American mythologist Joseph Campbell. For some reason I thought that myths and dreams would have a connection with my other poster. There's also something symmetrical about this quote.

5) MAKING IT HAPPEN Lauren from Loligo did a beautiful job screenprinting our posters - 16 in total, A2 2 colours. Beach Gallery was an amazing exhibition space, thanks guys!

6) SHOW TIME The private view was a great night! A lot of people showed up and there was an interactive bit where visitors could draw their imaginary friends on balloons. We also managed to get some nice repercussion from design blogs. Really happy with the event, looking forward to the next one!
